Frequently asked questions
-
How do I know if I am seeing a board-certified dermatologist?
Ask at your current dermatology office if your physician is board-certified. It is illegal to claim board certification if it is not true. However, some providers could be board certified in a different speciality and practicing dermatology. You can look up the board status of any physician at the American Board of Medical Specialties. Our physicians at Monarch Dermatology & Surgery are board-certified in dermatology.
-
How do I know if a spot needs to be checked?
If you have a spot or area on your skin that is constantly irritated, bleeds for no reason, or has changed in size, shape, and/or color, it needs to be examined by a dermatologist. Know your own body and perform regular self-exams.
-
What does skin cancer look like?
Skin cancer can look like a patch of dry skin, something that doesn’t heal, or a brown spot/mole. It is important to pay attention to your skin and watch for any changes in skin lesions, or if you get new moles. In dermatology, we use the ‘ABCDEs’ for melanoma to teach patients what to look for in the skin.
-
What are the ABCDE's of skin cancer?
A = Asymmetry (one half of the mole is different than the other). B = Irregular Borders (jagged edges, not clear borders). C = Color (different colors within a mole, shades of brown/black/grey/red). D = Diameter (any mole larger than a pencil eraser should be checked). E = Evolving (any skin lesion that is changing – enlarging/painful/crusty/ scaly.)
